TBT: Froning And Spealler Narrowly Escape With Victory
Following his four-peat winning streak as the ‘champ’ of the CrossFit Games, Rich Froning announced his retirement from the annual individual competition.
That doesn’t mean his fellow competitiors are in the clear though.
Froning is excited for his next adventure in ‘going team’ for the 2015 CrossFit Games’ season, and, in the interim, boosting team spirit along the way in competitions such as CrossFit’s Team Series this past fall, the CrossFit Invitational in November, and coming in January, the Kill Cliff East Coast Championships (ECC) in Boston.
This year, Froning returns to the Kill Cliff ECC as part of the Team Competition on Day 2--with his ‘Dream Team’ from last year, of course (alongside teammates Chris Spealler, Stacie Tovar and Elisabeth Akinwale).
Last year, the team took the first place podium in the last minute of the final workout, when ‘the champ’ (Froning) and the ‘legend’ (Spealler) crossed the finish line together on the partner barbell with a 245 lb. barbell all the way to the very end—beating out the leaders of the weekend, ‘Team Dirty South’ (Guido Trinidad, Noah Ohlsen, Talayna Fortunado and Emily Friedman).
The Kill Cliff ECC is a fitness competition currently unparalleled by any out there, with one day solely devoted to individual competition with Regional and Games-level competitors, and day two consisting of team competition. All individual competitors from Day 1 are invited to participate in the Team Competition on Day 2, and welcome to invite other ‘players’ and form any team that they wish. HERE is a peak at some of last year’s power house teams.
While Froning is always in it to win it, year two of the Kill Cliff ECC’s team competition is anyone’s for the taking. The total roster of teams are currently being finalized and all athletes are training to bring the heat during the weekend of January 24-25, 2015.
FloElite will broadcast all the coverage on FloElite.com, LIVE the entire weekend.
