"Fittest On Wall Street" Fitter Than Froning?
"Fittest On Wall Street" Fitter Than Froning?
Mark Rubin is a bad dude.
With a 2:19 800m sprint, a 36" vertical, and a 4.75 40, Mark Rubin handily won the Wall Street Decathlon this past weekend.
At 6'3" 225 lbs, he's quite a bit bigger than the average CrossFit Games competitor (Rich's profile on the Games site has him listed at 5'9", 198), but would he be able to stand toe to toe with the best CrossFitter in the world?
Here's what we know: The Wall Street Decathlon, a charity event put on to fight pediatric cancer, doesn't have any long events, any tests of strength, or any gymnastic skill events. That said, it does a good job of finding the man and woman who've got some explosiveness, sprinting ability, and muscle endurance.
So would Mark Rubin beat Rich Froning at the CrossFit Games? No chance. CrossFit is too specific and requires more of its participants than the Wall Street Decathlon does. But would Mark Rubin beat Rich Froning at the Wall Street Decathlon? Let's take a look at each event.
400m run
Mark Rubin - 54.35
Rich Froning - 1:05
This isn't surprising. Rubin was in the NFL as a free safety and his athletic history with swimming and lacrosse will likely give him an advatnage in sprint events.
Score: Rubin 1, Froning 0
Football Throw
Mark Rubin - 60 yards
Rich Froning - 76ish yards (softball throw)
This one is difficult to judge due to the differences between footballs and softballs. Let's instead judge it compared to the longest throws with those respective implements. Vinny Testaverde has the distinction of longest football throw at 80 yards, which puts Mark Rubin at 75% the record.
The longest softball throw is 107 yards. This puts Rich Froning at 71.5% of the record. Granted this is from 2011 and Rich might have improved his throw due to all the CrossFit he's been doing, but it's the best data we've got so...
Score: Rubin 2, Froning 0
Dips
Mark Rubin - 54
Rich Forning - ???
So we don't have a score for Froning's max set of dips, but we do know that the Wall Street Decathlon's standards are different from CrossFit. It's only to 90 degrees in the elbow so it's not as deep as the CrossFit dip, and kipping is not allowed.
Rich is know for having really good overhead endurance, with large sets of push press and strict hspu. We also know he can crush Elizabeth, which includes plenty of ring dips, and CrossFit rewards muscle endurnace so I'd say it's fair to assume Rich at least earns a tie in this event.
Score: Rubin 2.5, Froning 0.5
20 yard shuttle
Mark Rubin - 4.35
Rich Froning - ???
CrossFit isn't really known for its lateral movements or change of direction tests. In the ZigZag sprint event from 2013, Froning finished 18th overall leading us to believe he's not likely going to beat Rubin in this one.
Score: Rubin 3.5, Froning 0.5
40 yard dash
Mark Rubin - 4.75
Rich Froning - ???
Another event that favors speed over endurance, another event without any data on Rich's performance. While it's not a perfect comparison, the difference in the 400m and the shuttle should skew this towards Mark Rubin.
Score: Rubin 4.5, Froning 0.5
Max pull ups, strict
Mark Rubin - 26
Rich Froning - 22 (in 2013, after a max set of bench press with 195)
Rich did 22 strict pull ups in the first round of Lynne in 2013. With another couple years of training under his belt and without a max set of bench immediately before, I'd say this is at least a tie.
Score: Rubin 5, Froning 1
Vertical jump
Mark Rubin - 36"
Rich Froning - 33"
Pretty cut and dry here. The trend is that the Wall Street Decathlon favors speed and explosiveness, both of which are integral parts but not the whole picture for a CrossFitter.
Score: Rubin 6, Froning 1
500m row
Mark Rubin - 1:21
Rich Froning - 1:24
This one isn't that surprising. Rubin outweighs Forning by 25 pounds and is 6 inches taller.
Score: Rubin 7, Froning 1
Max reps bench press, 175
Mark Rubin - 44
Rich Froning - ???
Rich probably benches more often than any other CrossFitter and CrossFit rewards muscle endurance, so I'd have to say this is a draw.
Score: Rubin 7.5, Froning 1.5
800m run
Mark Rubin - 2:19.39
Rich Froning - ???
Again we see an event that favors people who grew up sprinting. Rich is probably faster now than he was when he started CrossFit, but it's difficult to make an argument that he'd run a 800m competitive with this time.
Final Score: Rubin 8.5, Froning 1.5
So what's this mean? It means Mark Rubin is taller, heavier, and faster than Rich. There's a lot this Decathlon doesn't include: max strength event, gymnastics, any mixed modal testing. I feel confident saying that these events aren't in Rich Froning's wheelhouse, but I'm also confident in saying that Rich would smash Mark Rubin in just about every CrossFit Games, Regional, or Open event.
