Breaking Down Regional Events 3, 4, & 5
We now know five of the seven events from the 2016 CrossFit Games Regionals. We’ve already looked at Events 1 and 2, so let’s break down Events 3, 4, and 5:

Events 3 and 4: “Couple Couples”

Event 3

For time:
104 wall ball (20/14)
52 pull ups

*6-minute cap
*at the 7-minute mark, begin Event 4

Event 4

4 rounds for time:
28 pistols
15 power cleans (115/80)

*10-minute cap

Events 3 and 4 are separately scored, but will practically function as one event because they are performed back to back with minimal rest. Event 3 is a simple couplet which most Games level athletes will do unbroken. This may affect Event 4, but the best CrossFitters in the world will be able to catch their breath and pace themselves through the pistols and recover their grip strength for the cleans.

Event 3 winners: Jacob Heppner and Bjorgvin Karl Gudmundsson; Sam Briggs and Annie Thorisdottir

Event 4 winners: Scott Panchik and Josh Bridges; Kara Webb and Camille Leblanc-Bazinet

Event 5: “Core-diac Arrest”

3 rounds for time:
400m run on the Trueform
40 GHD sit ups
7 deadlifts (405/275)

*16-minute cap

This workout is fantastic. Tax the hamstrings on the Trueform, tax the midline on the GHD, then ask these athletes to pull heavy. Where Events 2, 3, and 4 arguably favor smaller athletes, Event 5 absolutely punishes smaller athletes. Also, athletes with longer arms (like Austin Malleolo) will do well here.

The weight of this deadlift is big. For the men, it’s as heavy as the 2013 CrossFit Games finals, and for the women it’s even heavier than it was back then. Back then, we saw the best of the Games athletes fail reps (Josh Bridges on the men’s side, Natalie Newhart on the women’s side). With another few years of escalation in competitors' fitness, we’ll see some Games level athletes destroy this event. But for now, some of the men and more of the women will struggle with this weight.

Event 5 winners: Ryan Fisher and Austin Malleolo; Brooke Wells and Kara Webb
