"I'll just take the win from that workout and concentrate on the next." - Sam Briggs
Athletes were introduced to a new object this afternoon- the snail. A giant cylinder to be pushed across the field. The snail weighs 100lbs. empty, and 400lbs. filled with sand for the women.
Camille Leblanc-Bazinet is known for doing particularly well on rope climbs, and coming into the day in 24th place overall, she needed to make the most of it and pick up as many points as possible. She finished 11th in the heat and X overall.
Thuri Helgadottir ran away with the event from the beginning. She was smooth on the rope climbs and adapted to the snail well. Helgadottir held the lead comfortably until Chyna Cho appeared out of nowhere on the final 40ft. snail push. Cho wasn't able to edge Helgadottir, but still finished second in the heat and fifth overall. Helgadottir finished first in the heat and third overall with a time of 13:19:56. "It was fun." she said after the event. She has not had a career event win yet, so was in hopes no one in the final heat would knock out her time. The loudest cheers came for Jen Smith though. She made it clear she wasn't giving up, even pushing the snail with her one good foot. At this point, points don't matter for Smith, it's just her against the event.
In the final heat, it was no surprise Sam Briggs performed well. She took off on the event and ran away with it through the end, setting a new event record of 12:30:44. This makes Briggs' ninth career event win and second event win of the 2016 Games. She is the only woman to have two event wins thus far.
