Gary Helmick set the time to beat in the first heat of 2:50. His wife, Alea Helmick, took the event win for the women with a time of 2:32. The Helmick's sit 28th and 25th on the leaderboard respectively.
Marcus Filly won the second heat, but couldn't knock down Helmick's time. He ended up taking fourth in the event, his highest finish yet, and will sit in 13th on the leaderboard going into Sunday. "…and by the way, this is the latest I've worked out in 10 years. It's so late. It's bedtime." He said after the event.
Going into the final heat, it was important for Ben Smith, Patrick Vellner, and Josh Bridges to pick up as many points as possible. Jacob Heppner, Cole Sager, and Brent Fikowski held the lead most of the event. Fikowski ended up taking the event win with a time of 2:46, and moves into fourth place on the leaderboard. While he fell down the leaderboard yesterday, he managed to climb right back up Saturday. "Just been training hard all year." He said. "I love to compete. This is the best place where the best athletes are, trying to prove myself."
Mat Fraser finished 10th in the event, but still sits in first place overall with a 160 point lead over second place Ben Smith. Smith took fifth in the event, and third place Vellner took ninth. Bridges finished 28th in the event and slid down to seventh place overall.
"The weekend's not over...It's not over until tomorrow." - Mat Fraser
