We now know the gauntlet individual athletes will face at the 2016 CrossFit Games Regionals and the final two events will be exciting to watch and challenging to complete.

Event 6: Chipper

For time:
1000m assault air bike
100’ handstand walk
10 overhead squats (225/155)
500m row
50 burpee box jump overs
5 overhead squats

*16-minute cap

The burpee box jump overs require the athlete to completely clear the box with their jump and is at two different heights. The first forty reps are at 12” for men and 6” for women and the last ten reps are at 24” for men and 12” for women.

The theme of the 2016 Regionals is “heavy, high skill work capacity” and this event follows suit. These are the heaviest overhead squats we’ve seen at Regionals and they are only slightly lighter (while being significantly more volume) than the load in the Thick n Quick event at the 2014 CrossFit Games.

The heaviest overhead squats we’ve seen at Regionals were the 8 at 205/135 in the final event at the 2014 Regionals and those definitely separated some people. The potential Games athletes won’t have much trouble with these weights and volume, and I expect the event winners to complete the entire event, including the handstand walk, unbroken.

Event winners: Mat Fraser and Marcus Filly; Emily Bridgers and Julie Foucher

Event 7: Invitational

For time:
21 thrusters (95/65)
3 legless rope climbs
15 thrusters
2 legless rope climbs
9 thrusters
1 legless rope climb

*6-minute cap

This is a variation of the 2013 CrossFit Games “Legless” event and is also the first event from the 2015 CrossFit Invitational.

What a way to end the weekend! The past few years has seen Regionals end with a sprint type workout that forces athletes to throw caution into the wind to earn the last few available points and this event is no different. A six minute cap is generous as I expect the winning times to be under the 3 minute mark. Remember that Josh Bridges won 2013’s Legless event in around six minutes and Rich Froning finished this exact event at the Invitational last year in under 3 minutes.

Event Winners: Ben Smith and Bjorgvin Karl Gudmundsson; Chyna Cho and Margaux Alvarez
