The Iconic event in the sport, the Atlas Stones, wrapped up the weekend. Five stones, ranging in weight from 275-410lbs were lifted to progressively lower platforms. The hot weather, dirt arena, fresh slick Atlas Stones, and long day of competing got to the competitors. Going into the event, fan favorite, Savatinov, pulled out due to cramping and dehydration. Hot weather and dirt is a nightmare for tacky (a sticky substance used to aid in the grip on Atlas Stones).
The 66” height of the first platform made it tough for the shorter competitors like Thompson and Carradine. They loaded one and two stones respectively. In the second heat, Benzel and Oberst both loaded three stones, but Benzel was faster. In the third heat, Pritchett and Felix did not disappoint with very fast runs. Pritchett was in the lead before a cramp on the fourth stone. Felix went on to load the fifth stone.
In the last heat of the day it came down to DeVaughn vs Best. Who would win the day?
DeVaughn had the hometown support of the crowd (including an entire baseball team he coaches), but Best pulled ahead to start. Best fumbled with the fifth stone and DeVaughn almost pulled ahead for the win, but Best regained control of the final stone. He loaded it for the event, and competition win.
Results:
5/31.4 sec: Mark Felix
5/35.09 sec: Nick Best
5/36.35 sec: Derek Devaughn
4/18.62 sec: Jerry Pritchett
3/13.7 sec: Bryan Benzel
3/33.75 sec: Rob Oberst
2/26.25: Stan Caradine
1/41.15: Ben Thompson
Did not lift Dimitar Savatinov
