The 2016 America's Strongest Man show will challenge the best middleweight and heavyweight strongmen in the nation with five epic tests this weekend.
Stay tuned to FloElite on Saturday, October 1, to follow along with our coverage.
Here's what to expect from the show.
In this event, the athletes will press a circus dumbbell for as many reps as possible. The 105kg class will use 200lb, while the Open class (heavyweights) will use a 240lb dumbbell.
Two of the competitors in the Open division are world record holders in the circus dumbbell: Brian Shaw was the first man to ever press a 300lb dumbbell in competition, and Dimitar Savatinov holds the world record for the heaviest dumbbell ever pressed in competition at 310lb.
A classic strongman event, the truck pull looks badass and tests an impressive combination of upper body strength, lower body strength, skill, and grit.
Conan's Wheel (aka "The Wheel Of Pain") is based on a scene from the 1982 Arnold Schwarzenegger film "Conan The Barbarian," where a young Conan is captured into slavery and forced to push a mill around in circles all day and night. One by one his fellow slaves die and are removed, but 12 years later, the once skinny Conan has transformed into peak physical development Arnold. Obviously.
In modern strongman, Conan's Wheel is a zercher carry for max distance instead of a push, but the idea of "Wheel Of Pain" definitely lives on. At America's Strongest Man, Conan's Wheel will be weighed down with a Harley-Davdison Fat Boy motorcycle. The 105kg class will be carrying approximately 600lb and the Open division will use about 700lb.
Another classic strongman event, the car deadlift for reps is not only a fantastic test of strength and stamina, it's also a lot of fun to watch. Everyone knows how big a car is, and that they weigh thousands of pounds. While we also know these athletes aren't pulling the full weight of the car, it's an impressive feat nonetheless.
The Stone of Steel, a newer implement in the strongman world, is a steel ball that can be loaded with regular training plates to weights ranging from 100lb to 450lb+. At America's Strongest Man, the stones will be tested not for heaviest loaded or reps in a minute, but instead for max height.
The 105kg division will be using a 300lb apparatus, while the Open division will use a 350lb stone. Unlike regular Atlas stones, no tacky is allowed with the Stone of Steel.
Brian Shaw enters as the favorite in this event, as he's probably the tallest competitor. He also holds the world record for heaviest stone ever loaded with the 555lb Manhood Stone.
